How To Frame A Door Opening?
Framing a door opening requires a level header, straight side supports and a rough opening sized for the complete door frame plus installation clearance. The opening must carry surrounding loads without transferring damaging pressure to the door. Check Whether the Wall Is Load-Bearing
This is the first decision, not the header size.
Removing or cutting structural framing without understanding the load path can damage the building. When the wall is load-bearing, a qualified builder, engineer or local authority should determine:
Temporary support requirements
Header construction
Stud quantity
Fasteners
Structural connections
Applicable building code
The following steps describe general door-opening principles and do not replace a project-specific structural design.
Step 1: Obtain the Actual Door-System Dimensions
Do not frame the opening from the nominal door-leaf size alone.
The required opening depends on:
Door-leaf width and height
Frame outside dimensions
Threshold
Head clearance
Side installation gaps
Finished floor level
Wall thickness
Interior and exterior finishes
A 1,000 mm door leaf does not automatically require a 1,000 mm rough opening because the frame and installation clearance also occupy space.
Step 2: Mark the Opening From the Finished Floor
Use the final floor reference rather than an unfinished slab when possible.
Floor tile, stone, wood and leveling layers can raise the finished surface. Failing to include them may leave insufficient clearance below the door.
Mark:
Left and right opening edges
Header height
Finished floor line
Door swing direction
Interior and exterior sides
Step 3: Build the Side Supports
A typical framed opening includes full-height supporting members and shorter members that carry the header. Terminology and construction vary between timber, light-gauge steel, masonry and concrete buildings.
Both sides must be straight and capable of accepting the required frame anchors.
Measure the opening width at the top, middle and bottom. Significant differences indicate that the sides are not parallel.
Step 4: Install the Header
The header spans the opening and transfers the load above it to the sides. Its material and size depend on:
Opening width
Building structure
Load above the door
Wall construction
Local code
The header must not rest on or transfer building load directly to a non-structural door frame.
Step 5: Confirm the Rough Opening
Before wall finishes are completed, check:
Width at three heights
Height at both sides and the centre
Diagonal measurements
Side plumb
Header level
Wall thickness
Finished-floor allowance
Equal diagonals help indicate a square opening, but plumb and level must still be checked separately.
Step 6: Prepare Anchor Locations
Heavy steel, stainless steel and aluminum entrance doors may need anchors at defined frame positions. The wall must provide suitable fixing points.
Do not place electrical cables, plumbing or weak hollow areas where structural frame anchors are expected.
