How To Install A Front Door Knob?
Installing a front door knob requires more than tightening two screws.
The knob, latch, strike plate, door thickness, bore diameter, backset, opening direction, and frame position must all be compatible. A mismatch can cause the latch to bind, the knob to loosen, or the door to remain partially open.
Before removing the existing hardware, confirm that a knob is suitable for the entrance. Heavy Security Doors, wide aluminum doors, pivot doors, and multi-point locking systems may require a lever handle, pull handle, mortise lock, or integrated lock set instead.

Tools and Parts to Prepare
For a standard cylindrical knob installation, the work may require:
Front door knob set
Matching tubular latch
Strike plate
Screwdrivers
Tape measure
Pencil

New holes should not be drilled until the hardware template and door construction have been checked.
Metal entrance doors may contain reinforcement plates, thermal-break profiles, internal ribs, concealed wiring, or decorative panels that are not suitable for ordinary woodworking tools.
Confirm the Door Measurements
Measure the door thickness and compare it with the knob-set range.
Check the backset, which is the distance from the door edge to the center of the main bore. Common hardware may use different backsets, so the existing hole should not be assumed correct.
Inspect the bore diameter and the smaller edge hole for the latch.
Also confirm:
Left-hand or right-hand operation
Inward or outward opening
Position of the existing strike
Clearance from decorative trim
Distance from another lock
Required fire or security rating
Compatibility with the door material
A front-door lock should comply with the requirements of the complete entrance system.
Remove the Existing Knob
Keep the door open and support it with a wedge.
Locate the mounting screws on the interior knob or trim plate. Remove them while holding both sides of the hardware so the exterior section does not fall.
Pull the two knob assemblies apart and slide the latch out from the door edge.
Remove the strike plate only when it will be replaced or repositioned.
Inspect the old holes for cracks, stripped screws, corrosion, or deformation before installing the new set.
Install the Latch
Look for a marking that indicates the correct orientation.
The beveled face of a spring latch usually faces the direction in which the door closes against the strike plate. This allows the latch to retract as it contacts the strike.
Insert the latch into the edge hole and check that the faceplate sits flat.
When a faceplate recess is required, trace the outline and remove only enough material for a flush fit. Cutting too deeply can weaken the edge or allow the latch to move.
Fasten the latch without overtightening the screws.
Fit the Exterior Knob
Insert the exterior knob spindle through the latch mechanism.
Keep the keyway and decorative trim in the intended orientation. Some lock sets include installation tabs or posts that must pass through corresponding openings.
Hold the exterior side in place while positioning the interior assembly.
Do not force the spindle. Resistance usually indicates that the latch, spindle, or mounting posts are misaligned.
Attach the Interior Knob
Align the interior knob with the exterior assembly and start both mounting screws by hand.
Tighten them gradually, alternating between the screws. This helps keep the trim plates even.
Excessive tightening may compress the door surface, distort the mechanism, or make the knob difficult to turn.
Test the knob before closing the door. The latch should retract fully and return without sticking.
Align the Strike Plate
Close the door slowly and observe where the latch meets the frame.
The latch should enter the strike opening without lifting, lowering, or forcing the door sideways.
A small alignment problem may be corrected by adjusting the strike plate. A larger problem may indicate:
Loose hinges
A sagging door leaf
An uneven frame
Incorrect latch height
Door movement caused by temperature
An installation opening that is out of square
Do not enlarge the strike opening excessively. The strike plate and frame reinforcement contribute to security.
Test Every Function
With the door open, test the knob, latch, key, privacy button, or locking function several times.
Then test it with the door closed.
Confirm that:
The latch engages completely.
The knob returns to its normal position.
The key turns without excessive force.
The door does not rattle in the frame.
The handle trim remains stable.
The weatherstrip does not prevent closing.
The lock can be opened from the required side.
Emergency exit operation remains available.
Keep the door open during the first locking test so an installation problem does not leave the installer outside.

A residential cylindrical knob may be suitable for a conventional light entrance door, but it is not the only hardware option.
